Choosing between these platforms

How do these DAM platforms differ?

They are not all the same kind of product, which is the first thing to sort out. Of the 18 listed here, 13 are full digital asset management systems (Acquia DAM, Adobe Experience Manager Assets, Aprimo, Asset Bank, Brandfolder, Bynder, Canto, Daminion, Filecamp, MediaValet, Tenovos, Terentia, Wedia). The rest solve adjacent problems: 2 are creative operations tools (Air, Templafy), 1 is a headless DAM built API-first (Cloudinary), 1 is a brand portal (Frontify), and 1 is enterprise content services (Box). Comparing a brand portal against a full DAM on features will mislead you, because they answer different questions.

What is the difference between a DAM and a headless DAM?

A full DAM gives people an interface to search, browse and download assets, and that interface is most of the product. A headless DAM exposes the same library through an API and expects your own site, app or commerce system to be the interface. Choose headless when developers are the primary consumer and assets are delivered into products automatically. Choose a full DAM when the primary users are marketers, designers or librarians who need to find things themselves.

What is a brand portal, and is it a DAM?

A brand portal is a controlled, outward-facing window onto approved assets and brand rules, usually for partners, agencies and distributed teams. It is not a full DAM: it typically does not manage the working library, the versions or the rights behind the scenes. Many organizations run a brand portal on top of a DAM rather than instead of one.

How should you shortlist a DAM vendor?

Sort by product category first, since half the shortlists that go wrong are comparing different kinds of tool. Then judge on the behaviours that are expensive to discover late: whether the system acts on rights expiry rather than only storing a date, whether metadata survives a migration, and who will implement it. The guide to comparing DAM platforms covers the criteria, and each platform page covers who can implement it.
