Cloudinary outlined HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) delivery with Next.js to replace progressive MP4 playback. Adaptive bitrate splits a video into multiple quality tiers and serves the best version based on real-time network conditions. A static MP4 buffers when bandwidth drops; HLS switches to a lower-quality stream mid-playback. Video teams that ship progressive files to global audiences face constant buffering complaints.
