Buttery-smooth image gallery transitions with the View Transition API

Image: Cloudinary Blog

DAM Cowboy · W38 · September 2026

Cloudinary demonstrates the View Transition API, a browser-native method for animating DOM state changes without a JavaScript framework. The example is an image gallery where thumbnails expand into lightbox views with zero flicker. For DAM portals serving branded asset libraries, this matters because smooth transitions keep users in flow. The API is supported in Chrome and Edge; Safari and Firefox lag. The calculus is whether a better browsing experience justifies the polyfill weight for unsupported browsers.
